Mals Driving School Learner Centre

Useful guidance for confident, safe driving

Clear, practical information to support your lessons and help you prepare for independent driving.

01

Your first driving lesson

Your first lesson normally begins with a brief discussion about any previous experience, your goals and how you feel about learning. The early part of the session focuses on the controls, cockpit checks, observations and moving away safely at a pace that suits you.

02

Managing driving nerves

Nerves are common and do not mean you cannot become a confident driver. Breaking skills into smaller steps, using clear routines and reviewing progress after each lesson can make learning feel more manageable.

03

When to take a mock test

A mock test is most useful when you can drive independently for longer periods and manage a range of roads without frequent prompting. It helps identify patterns that may not be obvious during ordinary lessons.

04

Common driving-test faults

Frequent problem areas include observations at junctions, mirror use before changing speed or direction, appropriate speed, lane discipline and effective planning. Your lessons should build these habits consistently rather than only just before the test.

05

Roundabouts and busy local roads

Good roundabout driving comes from early observation, appropriate speed, lane choice and reading signs and road markings. Practice should progress from quieter junctions to more complex local routes as your confidence improves.

Preparing for test day

Bring the required documents, arrive in good time and focus on safe decision-making rather than trying to produce a perfect drive. A small mistake does not automatically mean the test is over.
